Nature experiences for children
This experimental study conducted by a researcher from the Natural Resources Institute Finland was the first in the world to establish that the immune regulation of kindergarten children aged between 3 and 5 years improved when forest soil, turf rolls and planter boxes were installed in the yards where the children played.
High hygiene levels, urban lifestyles and insufficient contact with nature impoverish the microbiomes of our bodies. A more homogenous microbiome increases the risk of disruptions to the immune system, such as atopic eczema, diabetes, coeliac disease and allergies. Dozens of studies have already established that children who live in rural areas and have more contact with nature have a smaller risk of contracting diseases related to immune disorders. The recent study shows that contact with green spaces five times a week made the microbiome that protects from immune disorders more diverse among kindergarten children.
