Small green spaces are also important
Nature conservation planning often focuses on protecting large areas. The benefits of extensive protected areas are obvious, since the larger the area, the better it can protect the species that live there. Meanwhile, the protection of smaller areas and green pockets has been neglected, as their protection has been seen as having a smaller impact.
However, this study supports the notion that even small green pockets can be vital for the protection of biodiversity. This is particularly important in areas where human involvement is extensive and green spaces are small and far between. In cities, even the smallest green spaces should be protected and restored. If the focus is on extensive areas alone, we may lose species that prefer smaller habitats.
